26. Love Starts With L

Peace and Harmony

The engines on the helicopter finally died down. I had to squint with the amount

of light that was everywhere. The Chief's voice finally came through.

"Ryuzaki, please let me go an make the arrest."

"I understand. But please remember this is Kira, make sure to take every

precaution. Don't let him see your face. Watari, if Higuchi tries anything or makes any

sudden moves…"

Watari did not move from his position. "Understood. I will shoot to stop him, not

to kill."

I watched as the Chief and Mogi slowly walked towards Higuchi's car. They both

had tinted helmets, just in case. They stopped by one of the police cars and looked inside.

It probably was Aizawa. For once in my life, I was so thankful for him. Aizawa then got

out of the car with a tinted helmet as well and the three of them along with six armed

police approached his car.

"Higuchi! Put your hands behind your head then get out of the car!" The Chief

snapped.

Higuchi slowly got out of the car and held up his hands weakly. Blood dripped

down one of his hands and soaked into his dress shirt. Before I could blink they had him

blindfolded and on the ground with handcuffs.

"We've apprehended him," said Mogi.

"Mogi, I want you to put a head set on him as planned," said Light.

"Rodger."

I watched as Mogi forced the head set on him which made Higuchi flinch a bit, bit

he did not try to fight back.

"Higuchi, how are you able to kill people?" L asked. "Tell me!"

He growled.

L randomly pulled out a container of tea and poured it into a cup. I looked at him

strangely but he did not take his eyes off Higuchi.

"If you do not talk I'll use whatever means necessary to get it out of you!"

He sighed. "The notebook…"

"Notebook?"

"You probably won't believe me but I've got a special notebook. If I write

someone's name in it while thinking of their face that person dies."

I stared shocked at L. T-That notebook… o-on his table… It… killed people?!

L started blankly at him. What on earth could he be thinking? Did he believe him?

It did sound rather strange… I looked back out the window to watch as the Chief

searched the man's bag.

"Mr. Yagami."

"Yeah, I found it. It was in one of the compartments of Higuchi's bag." The Chief

sat in the car and flipped through the exact notebook I had seen on his table. "He has a lot

of names in it, but there doesn't seem to be anything else unusual about it." Suddenly, he

started to scream and he threw the notebook out of the car.

"Chief!" I screamed.

Light and L gasped.

He fell out of the car and looked up, as if staring at something.

"What is it Mr. Yagami?" L asked calmly.

"It's… a monster!" The Chief screamed as he reached into his coat.

"Please, calm down. Remember, you are not armed."

"O-Oh right… of course."

I stared at the Chief helplessly then I suddenly ran to the door and jumped out of

the helicopter. I wasn't sure what I was doing, I just felt like I had to do something.

"Maro! Get back here!" L yelled.

I didn't bother to even look or go back. I raced to the Chie's side. "Chief! What's

wrong?!"

"Maro! Get back to the helicopter!" Mogi yelled.

"Maro!" The Chief grasped my shoulder and pointed at something. "Can't you

see that thing over there?!" he started to shake furiously.

I looked to where he was pointing. I saw the notebook beside him and picked it

up. "Chief… It's alright, there's no-"

I looked to where he was pointing and before me was a terrifying creature! It had

a skeleton body with a yellow cat-like eye with pink dreadlocks. There was a bandage

over the other eye and there were stitches around its neck as if its head was stitched on.

It was tall and had long arms. I sort of looked female.

My eyes widened as I screamed. "What is that thing?!" I pointed my gun at it as

my arm shook furiously.

"Maro, what's wrong?" L asked. I could tell he was trying to be calm, but it

wasn't working much.

I stared at the notebook then back at the creature. "I-I think you h-have to touch

the notebook to see it!"

"Please try and stay calm, Maro. I need you to bring the notebook to me."

I shook furiously. "What if it kills me?!"

"Please, stay calm."

"Yeah! You try being me and stay calm!" I slowly got to my feet and backed up

towards the helicopter. It watched me, but stayed still It almost looked… worried. I got to

the helicopter and looked at L. Looking at him made me feel safe… I gave him the

notebook. "H-Here…"

He stared at the notebook then I pointed to where the monster was. He looked at it

but he seemed perfectly calm!

"It really is… a shinigami… They really do… exist…" His eyes widened as he

stared in disbelief. I could tell he was thinking, but about what?

I couldn't stop shaking as the shinigami started to glare at us. This was the

freakiest thing ever!

"Come on! Let me see!" I heard Light yell. He then grabbed the notebook and L

was in such thought he hadn't even noticed. He flinched when he looked down and the

notebook was gone. He slowly looked at Light terrified as he threw his head back and

screamed.

I could help but let out a small scream as Light continued to yell. L flinched but

said nothing. My heart started to beat quickly and I began to shake even more.

"What's going on?!" I whimpered.

Light finally stopped and lowered his head. His breathing became quick and L

slowly leaned foreword to look at his face.

"Are you… okay Light? I suppose seeing that monster would surprise anyone."

"Ryuzaki…" Light opened the notebook.

"What is it?"

"I want to check this out. I'm going to compare the names in the notebook with

the victims."

L looked back at the shinigami and I did the same.

"Oh right… Yeah, that sounds like a good idea."

We both glanced at Light. Why was L letting him hold it?! Light could be the real

Kira! What if he killed us all right now?!

"Mr. Yagami, please take Higuchi to the car."

"U-Uh.. .Right, of course."

The three of them then started to walk Higuchi to the Chief's car.

"You know," Light said, causing us both to look at him, "about this notebook, I

wonder what we would find if we put it through forensic analysis."  

"…That doesn't sound like you, Light. We both know this thing is beyond

science."

Light chuckled. "Yeah, you're right. Hmm…"

Light looked up and we all looked up as they walked Higuchi to the car. It was as

if the world was in slow motion… I could hear almost everything, the footsteps, our

hearts, the sirens … everything.

Suddenly, Higuchi flinched and started to make choking noises. Everyone gasped

and stared at him as he weakly struggled.

"Ryuzaki! Higuchi is-"

"What the ****?! What's happening?!" Light shouted.

"he's having a heart attack!" I yelled.

"Impossible…!" L stared in shock as Higuchi fell to his knees and threw his head

back.

"Hey! Higuchi!" yelled Mogi.

I quickly ran over to them. He wasn't moving… "No! He can't die now!" I

snapped.

"T-This is impossible!" shouted the Chief. "T-There's nothing I can do…!

Higuchi is already-"

"Dead…" I growled.

~~~~BACK AT HEADQUARTERS~~~~

I was still shaken from all that had happened, but I was calmer now. Misa had

been untied and was now in her room. L watched her and I sat on the couch in the main

room. The shinigami was here and it stood behind the couch across from me. I couldn't

help but stare at it… It was such a strange creature.

Aizawa, Mogi, Light, Reicheru, Matsuda, Chief, L, and I were in the main room.

The guy could now all see the shinigami and they all stared at it from their desks. Aizawa

opened the notebook and looked through it.

"'How to use it'," Aizawa read. "It says, 'The humans' whose name is written in

this notebook… shall die. This note will not take affect unless the persons' face is in their

mind while writing their name… Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be

affected. If the cause of death is written within the forty seconds while writing the

persons' name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not written the person will simply

die of a heart attack. After writing the cause of death, the details of the death should be

written within the next forty seconds.'"  

Aizawa paused and I watched as L stacked empty coffee creamers into a tower.

"As well, the back cover has some more instructions on how to use it." Aizawa

continued. "There are two more rules. One of them is: 'If you make this note unusable by

tearing it up or burning it, all the humans that have touched the notebook until then will

die…'"

Matsuda flinched. "What?! Is that really true Aizawa?!"

Reicheru shuttered. "Dang… We really shouldn't have touched that thing…"

"Yeah, that's what it says."

"What are we going to do?!" Matsuda shouted, panicking. He put his hand on his

forehead. "Man… Maybe I shouldn't have let my curiosity of seeing a shinigami get

a hold of me."

"Curiosity killed the cat…" Reicheru mumbled.

"Maybe," said the Chief. "But then you'd be the only one not knowing what

we're dealing with. Is that what you want?"

Matsuda grinned nervously. "O-Of course not. I want to be on the same page as

everyone on the Task Force, Chief."

Aizawa looked back at the notebook. "And then, there's this last rule. According

to these instructions of the back of the notebook… If the person using the note fails to

continually write names in the notebook in thirteen days of each other, then the user will

die…"

Matsuda gasped and smiled. "Wait a second! If that's true then that means Light

and Misa Misa are completely clear, doesn't it?!"

We all gasped.

"Yeah, now that you mention it, he's right! Light and Misa were detained for

more than fifty days! And they're still under surveillance! If one of them were Kira, these

is no way they'd be alive right now!"

Reicheru looked at the Chief. "Isn't that great news?!"

"Yeah."

"Rem… was it?" asked L. "That's your name, isn't it? The white thing over

there?"

Everyone stared at L a bit shocked.

"Ryuzaki, that's rude!" Reicheru snapped.

Rem glanced back at him. "What do you want?" It asked annoyed.

"There's more then one notebook in the human world, isn't there?"

"Who knows. There may be and there may not be."

L held up an empty coffee creamer to his face. "If there are other notebooks here

or in your world do they all have the same rules as this one?"

Rem walked to his side. "Yes, they're all the same. There are many notebooks in

the shinigami realm. They all have the same rules. Even the same rules when humans

obtain them."

"Ryuzaki!" Aizawa walked over to L. "Misa and Light have both been cleared of

suspicion! They shouldn't be under surveillance any longer."

"That's right!" Matsuda agreed.

"I suppose you're right…" L whispered. He went to put the creamer on the tower



but paused and pulled away. "I understand. But please, accept my apologize for all the

trouble."

Everyone smiled, except L and I.

The Chief walked to his son's side. "Thank goodness," he said, putting his hand

on his shoulder.

Light stood up. "Yeah, but, we still can't say we've solved the case until we've

figured out everything. Would it be alright if I continued investigating with you without

the handcuffs on?"

"Yes."

And just… like that… they're… cleared… I thought.

Light and L were then unlocked and Light went to go say goodbye to Misa. I was

sooooo glad she was going to be leaving! Everyone went down to say goodbye, but L and

I stayed in the main room and watched everyone on cameras.

"Maro… I know I ask you this a lot but…"

"I think you did the right thing. The rules prove they're innocent, there's no

arguing with it."

He sighed. "I suppose…" He looked back at me and smiled as he took my hand

and led my to his lap. "At least I can spend more time with you now."

I smiled and put my hands on his cheeks before kissing him. "Mhm."

~~~~A FEW DAYS LATER~~~~

Everyone was in the main room doing research when the screen showed a picture

of the front door. It was Misa, of course…

"Hey! It's Misa Misa!" Matsuda said. He leaned back in his chair. "The poor girl.

As long as we're stuck in here we can't turn our cell phones on, so she has to come all the

way out here just to hang out with Light."

L, Reicheru, and I were sitting on the couch while enjoying some chocolate ice

cream.

The Chief turned to his son. "Light, would you hurry up and go see her? Don't

you know, you should never keep a woman waiting."

Light walked towards the door. "Okay."

I watched Light walk away then looked at Rem. It gasped. Was something…

wrong…? It suddenly seemed worried… Was it afraid of Misa? I looked at the screen to

see Misa hug Light and start laughing and talking about something. Suddenly L lowered

his ice cream and stared at the two intently as they embraced once again.
